2 Tricks For Moving Heavy Furniture

Posted on: 12 February 2018

If you have some heavy furniture to move, you are going to want to make sure that you utilize tips that are going to make it easier for you to move the furniture. When moving heavy furniture, it is all about leverage.

Put Sliders Under Your Furniture

The first thing you need to do is purchase some furniture sliders. These are small pads that you can slip under the feet of your furniture. You can find furniture sliders at most home improvement stores. The sliders you purchase should be based on the type of flooring that you have. You need special sliders if you are moving furniture over the carpet. If you need to carry or slide your furniture over grass, you should purchase sliders designed for carpet.

Sliders will allow you to slide your furniture for as far as possible. This will take less energy and effort on your part, and result in less lifting as well. As an alternative, you can also use Frisbees instead if you can't find any sliders. The key is to protect your floor while sliding your furniture.

Put the sliders under the corners of your furniture where the legs are. Then, use your legs to push the furniture across the floor. Try to push from the bottom or middle part of your furniture instead of near the top. This will give you the most leverage and reduce the risk of your furniture tipping over.

Use Your Legs When Lifting

Once you get your furniture to your door, you are going to need to lift your furniture to get it out of your house. When you have to lift the furniture, the key is to once again minimize the amount of weight that your body is actually moving.

You can use a dolly to help you lift the furniture over and out your door. For certain types of furniture, you can tilt it on its side and keep turning it from side to side to get it out. Sometimes though, you have to physically lift the furniture. When you physically lift the furniture, you want to get down into a squat. Put your hands somewhere where you have a good grip on the furniture. Then, push up with your legs and keep your back straight. Your legs should be shouldering all the weight of the furniture, not your back.

When you sit the furniture down, be gentle on your back. Squat down, and sit the furniture down. Don't use your back, sit the furniture down with your legs.

Try to push your furniture as far as you can, and when you have to lift it, use your legs. Save yourself by hiring furniture movers to assist you with moving your furniture if you have a lot of furniture to move.
